Are you feeling overwhelmed because you have been ignoring your needs and focusing on the needs of others? Eventually, you might even start having a series of physical, emotional, or relationship problems. And when you try to escape these difficulties, you notice that the challenges escalate. What is interesting is that most of us are not even aware that it is our own mind that is making it harder for us to enjoy the things we have worked so hard to achieve and miss out on the opportunities right in front of us.
By working together, I can teach you how to become a more vibrant you. I will help you prioritize your values, and guide you in taking action towards your goals. I have a strength-based approach and will provide you with individualized care that is respectful and empowering.
Please feel free to email me at nasimbavar@gmail.com to set up a meeting. I believe that while we cannot change the events of our past, we can certainly choose to live a more meaningful present. I look forward to working with you.

It's a good idea to find out a counselor's philosophy. It is going to have a big formative impact on you, perhaps more than anything else about them. My philosophy is teleogical - that we are all going and becoming someone, somewhere. What I believe identity + relationship = the good life. So being a person is about having relationship and having relationship is about being someone, really being someone. The student becomes a graduate. The job applicant becomes an employee and then a boss. The hurt person becomes fearful and bitter and lonely, and then lonelier. The person who loves becomes a lover. We are always becoming more of the person we are on a track to be.

Stop for a minute and ask yourself: who am I? That's my first question for you. Now here's the second: what kind of a person are you in the process of becoming? The core of my work is referenced in these two questions. The way I think, everything else falls in line behind your identity.

The best way to do the work of becoming more of a person is in relationship. The simplest definition of relationship is the giving and receiving of love. Relationship opens up the door for us to heal and grow. Each one of us has a past which has marked us, a present that embodies us and a future which will find us. The healing of these three comes from being loved in relationship. A good phrase that gets at this is ‘being loved into loving.’ That's part of my job description. I can assure you I will end up caring about you whether you like it or not.

Healing from your past, knowing the freedom of forgiveness, gaining the courage necessary to leave behind a dark place, becoming able to give and receive love, are the personal stepping stones in relationship which will transform you into a better and better person. In good relationship you don't kind of change, you do change. Guaranteed, because good relationship breathes new identity into us, every time. That's what relationship is - the nature of life in us. My work is successful when you become more of the person you are supposed to be: a (real and true) person in (life-giving) relationship.

Within a warm and collaborative relationship, my clients experience profound growth by better understanding themselves and then making the choices they desire which result in the positive and long-lasting changes they are seeking. The process of therapy includes alleviation of emotional and psychological pain, learning new ways to respond to life’s challenges, gaining self-confidence, identifying strengths and building on them and, finally, improving current relationships and developing new ones that support the new lives we are creating.

I have spent over 23 years providing not just direct services to clients but also training and supervising other clinicians including residents in the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at UCSD School of Medicine

Are you longing for closeness? Has intimacy become challenging in your relationship? These fundamental needs are at the center of how we move through life and yet can become so confusing for us. I am Sheila Kamen and for over a decade my specialty as a psychologist and sex therapist has been assisting individuals and couples as they sort through their most personal life issues.

Creating an extremely safe and caring setting provides you the opportunity to begin to open up about concerns that may be upsetting. Many of my clients experience depression, anxiety or life's concerns and know they need a professional to help them sort things out. I always feel so fortunate to be there working together.

However, because of my specialized training as a sex therapist, many clients open up to me about fears, doubts, concerns and feelings that affect their lives and relationships profoundly. It is my great honor to talk with them and support them as they begin to heal and discover what it means to see themselves and their sexuality in wonderful and healthy ways.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and offer a brief free phone consult. Feel free to contact me through the contact button on this site or give me a call.

I work with individuals, couples, and families to help each person resolve problems, to create more satisfying relationships, and to live more fulfilling and meaningful lives. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, couples conflict, substance abuse, eating disorders, chronic illness, and pre-marital issues, but I also have experience helping people through a wide range of other problems that may be bothering them (please see "Services Provided" for more detailed information). My approach is mostly collaborative - I believe that my clients should have options when choosing what type of therapy treatment they feel is best for them. I also, when appropriate, will work closely with a client's healthcare providers as part of the treatment. This way, my clients have additional support as we work through challenges.

I absolutely love working as a therapist! Nothing gives me more satisfaction than saving a marriage, increasing the bonds of love between family members, or helping someone overcome an addictive pattern and find new meaning in his or her life.

Whether you, or your teen, experiences panic attacks, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, difficulty adjusting to a new situation, or a similar life circumstance, there is relief out there.

It can be difficult to reach out for help, but I have worked with many people who are suffering from the stress, anxiety, or depressive feelings that come up when the weight of life is coming down on your shoulders. I help my clients- whether teens, young adults, or young professionals- to understand themselves better and learn and practice coping skills to reduce or eliminate the troubling symptoms, and help them heal from the hurt they may have experienced in the past. I utilize a variety of techniques including helping you to understand your thoughts and behavior better (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and making adjustments to help change your perceptions and experiences of life. I teach my clients how to be more Mindful by being in the moment and letting things go more easily, and I encourage them to have more compassion for themselves. Sometimes you just need someone to listen to you and be there to support you. I would be honored to be able to be there for you.

I work best with teens, young adults, and families who are ready to take a look at what is not working for them, and be open to making some changes so that they can achieve more inner-peace, happiness, successful relationships, and quality of life.

Experience all that transforms in your life when you begin living in a way that reflects compassion toward yourself, and a deeper connection with your emotions, dreams and truth.

I am a warm therapist with a comfortable style, over twenty years of experience and an excellent reputation in the professional community. Prior to establishing a full-time private practice, I provided therapy at the Departments of Psychiatry at UCSD and Rady Children's Hospital, and at Scripps Clinic, and trained other therapists.

I have expertise in many schools of therapy and healing, and will adapt therapy to meet your specific needs. Many women and men find my unique use of "focusing," integrated with other therapies, remarkably transformative and empowering.

RELIEF, PEACE OF MIND, BALANCE
Through our therapy you may shift out of your pain and the memories that hold you back, and tap into inner knowingness, wisdom and strength. You may be released from distressing symptoms, make important decisions, and become able to act in ways that are most true to yourself and propel your life forward.

THRIVING RELATIONSHIPS
Couples often say they now relate to their partners in ways that simply work better. They finally feel supported and understood and have a deeper connection. With the tools to handle conflict productively, they also become confident in the resilience of their relationship.

Such positive results are often just as true for relationships with children and other family members, friends and co-workers, and when you are seen individually. Even subtle changes in the way you relate to someone can be a powerful catalyst in transforming a relationship.

You, too, may find our work life changing even after prior therapy was of limited benefit.

One of the most important decisions you will make as you weigh your therapist options is selecting the most well-matched therapist for you. Only you can determine who that is. What I can do is describe what sets me apart so you can decide whether my blend of talent, expertise and experience is what you’re most seeking. With this in mind, consider the following:

- If you know you have psychological work to do but aren’t particularly fond of the idea of being in therapy, I love to find solutions for people like you.

- If it’s important to you you to enjoy your therapy journey rather than feel dragged down by facing your challenges, we will get along great.

-If you will settle for nothing less than root cause solutions instead mere symptom management, that’s how I work.

-If you’re seeking a level of wisdom that simply isn’t available in a therapist who hasn’t been around the block quite a few times, I might well be the seasoned therapist you’re hoping to find.

-If you don’t take well to cookie-cutter approaches and instead want a fully individualized and customized plan for resolving your particular situation & goals, that aligns with your unique temperament, customization is the only way I work.

-If you’re wanting to work with a therapist whose toolbox ranges from conventional to integrative, and who is equipped to help you attain your goals in as thorough, deep and rapid a way as possible, we’re going to get along great.

More specifically, -if you want to finally stop spinning your wheels treating symptom after symptom, I combine state-of-the-art rapid treatment modalities with my extensive training and decades of experience in spotting the root cause of problems, to help you do just that. In addition providing this with adults, I also do this children all the way down to toddlers, as well as with parenting challenges.

-If Central or South American Spanish is your first language, I am not merely bilingual, I’m bi-cultural.

-If you have not gotten what you wanted from prior therapy or are skeptical that the journey can be worthwhile, I have a strong track record of doing particularly well with folks like that.

Finally, -If this combination of strengths matches what you’re looking for, let’s have a brief phone conversation so we can go our next step toward discovering whether we’re an ideal match.
